Be a RecycleManiac

For four years now at this time of year, a strange but wonderful thing has taken hold of the Rice community: RecycleMania!

For 10 weeks beginning in January, Rice joins college and university recycling programs nationwide in a friendly competition to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita or the largest amount of total recyclables, produce the least amount of trash per capita or achieve the highest recycling rate.

Rice is among almost 500 schools — 26 in Texas — registered in this year’s competition, which began Jan. 18 and runs through March 28.

Rice first competed in RecycleMania in 2006 — the first school in Texas to do so — and finished in the upper half of participating schools.
