The iconic campanile built more than 100 years ago at the power plant
on the north side of campus now has a 21st-century twin at the new
utility plant on the south side of campus.

An 85-foot-tall tower was erected at the South Plant June 28 and is
one of the last parts of the plant to be put in place before it goes
into service later this month.

Designed by renowned New Mexico-based architect Antoine Predock, the
utility plant will power the Collaborative Research Center currently
under construction and eventually additional buildings on campus.

The South Plant was designed to be environmentally friendly and
energy-efficient. It has numerous “green” features, including
energy-efficient building materials and equipment, a vegetated roof,
provident operations systems that will reduce energy consumption
campuswide as well as the provision for future additions that could
capture electricity from solar panels and wind turbines.

projects under way, visit http://project.rice.edu or stop by the
Construction Information Center at the corner of Alumni Drive and
College Way.
