In memoriam: Brenda Robey

BRENDA ROBEY

Brenda Robey, assistant Web editor for Communication Services in Public Affairs, died April 13 after a battle with cancer. She was 53.

Robey joined the Public Affairs staff in 2000 as an administrative assistant. She later took on responsibility for maintaining the content of Rice’s home page and gateway pages  in addition to her administrative role.

“Brenda was a beloved friend and colleague who accomplished wonderful things with quiet competence, confidence and commitment,” said Linda Thrane, vice president for Public Affairs. “Through all her hardships, she never let go of her optimism. We miss her dearly and will hold on to her sense of hope.”

Thrane recalled one weekend last year when some crisis required posting information quickly on the rice.edu homepage. “I located Brenda in a Sam’s warehouse with a cartful of groceries and other goods,” Thrane said. “When she heard that Rice needed her, she abandoned the fruits of her shopping and raced home to get the information posted. Brenda just got things done.”

By the way, Thrane added, Robey returned to Sam’s and was able to retrieve her cart.

In Robey’s honor, members of the Public Affairs staff are participating in tonight’s Relay For Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at the Rice Track and Field Stadium.
