Longtime Rice employees recognized for service, dedication

This week 372 Rice faculty and staff were recognized for service milestones ranging from five to 45 years.

Frank Jones was recognized for 45 years of service to Rice.

Among those recognized at the Feb. 6 ceremony were Frank Jones ’58, the Noah Harding Professor of Mathematics and 2007 Texas Professor of the Year, who was the lone employee celebrating 45 years of service.

President David Leebron commended the honorees for their combined 5,000 years of service and invaluable contributions, which have helped Rice to be named one of the best places to work in Houston two years in a row by the Houston Business Journal.

”The university cannot function and deliver experiences to faculty and opportunities to students unless all of you are making the contributions you make every single day,” he said. ”It’s that kind of commitment and dedication that is not just about getting the job done. It’s about getting it done with dedication, excellence and caring.”

The ceremony also recognized the 35 employees who retired in 2007, including 13 retirees who worked at the university long enough to have a tree on campus named in their honor. A moment of silence also was held to remember the Rice employees and retirees who died last year.

Joyce Bald, Hanszen College coordinator, received the prestigious Elizabeth Gillis Award for Exemplary Service, which is awarded annually to recognize the outstanding achievements and service by a staff member in support of the university’s mission.
