Green groundbreaking

Rice alumnus Charles Duncan ’47 and his wife, Anne, helped break ground Sept. 27 for Rice’s 11th residential college, which will be named in their honor. The Duncans recently contributed $30 million to Rice in support of the university’s residential college system.

When Duncan College opens in the fall of 2009, it will be the first building at Rice to receive LEED certification at the gold level for its “green” roof and other sustainable features. The 324-bed facility will be built on Rice’s northeast campus.

Participants in the groundbreaking ceremony included, from left, Laura Kelly, Student Association president; Robin Forman, dean of undergraduates; David Leebron, Rice president; Charles Duncan; Anne Duncan; and Jim Crownover, chair of the Rice Board of Trustees. A video of the Duncan College groundbreaking ceremony will be posted at http://webcast.rice.edu. Learn more about construction on campus.
