Parking registration now available online

Rice News staff

Rice employees who have parking permits expiring at the end of August needn’t bear the summer heat trudging to the Parking Registration Office. Now Rice faculty, staff and even students can go online to not only renew their registration, but also to register to park on campus, change parking lots or get on a waiting list for another lot.

The new feature is available through Esther, the university’s online self-service system, at
<>. A person needs his or her Rice user identification number (also called an “E-number”), the personal identification number used to log in to Esther and the license plate number of the vehicle to be registered.

“It’s a new option we added for our customers’ convenience,” said Eugen Radulescu, director of administrative services. “It speeds up the whole process for them and in many cases eliminates the need to come to the parking office.”

Those who pay for parking through payroll deduction can complete the transaction without moving from their computer. The parking decal will be sent to them via campus mail or hand-delivered by parking staff.

“Almost 95 percent of our people pay through payroll deduction because not only is the permit then good for three years, the fee is taken out of their paycheck before taxes,” Radulescu said.

Those who opt to pay by check can register online, but they still must go to the Parking Registration Office — relocated this summer to the Central Campus Garage — to submit the check and receive the decal, which is valid for only one year if paid for this way.
