honors faculty and staff members for their years of service

As Houston makes
its bid to host the 2012 Olympic summer games, Mary Cronin,
associate vice president for human resources, noted that
there already are Olympians here. She was referring to Rice’s
Olympians: faculty and staff members who have dedicated
their careers to the ideals of Rice University.

Those faculty
and staff members were recognized Feb. 6 at the annual Service
Awards ceremony at the Grand Hall, Rice Memorial Center.

“Today
we salute faculty and staff at Rice who have attained service
milestones from 5 years to 40, spanning the years since
there were five colleges instead of nine, 1,600 undergraduates
instead of 2,700 and eight intercollegiate sports, just
for men, instead of the 16 that men and women enjoy today,”
Cronin said at the luncheon.

Provost Eugene
Levy told the 311 Service Award recipients and 35 retirees
that “the success of a university depends on the high
quality and dedicated contributions of a great many people.
At Rice, we are justly proud of the important contributions
of so many dedicated members of our university family.”

He noted that
the number of Service Awards presented to faculty and staff
has risen in each of the past 10 years, a testimony to the
long-term commitment that Rice employees have given to the
university.

Levy added that
as Rice enters its next century, he anticipates “a
new century of expanded commitments to excellence and leadership.
In the next 100 years, Rice will need ever-expanding levels
of dedicated contributions from all members of our community.”

Among the award
recipients were four employees who have served the university
for 40 years. They are Elizabeth Baber, head of database
management at Fondren Library; James Castañeda, professor
of Spanish and faculty athletics representative; Alan Grob,
professor of English; and Walter Isle, the Clarence L. Carter
Distinguished Service Professor of English and vice provost
for academic affairs.

To all the service
award recipients, who together have worked on campus for
a total of 3,365 years, Levy said, “You have all made
a life here at Rice and have made life here at Rice and
the distinction of Rice greater than it would have been
without your presence.”
