Sherry L. Bennett, assistant professor, Dept. of Political Science, with Renée M. Smith, assistant professor of political science at the U. of Rochester, presented “Representation and Salient Issues: Legislator Responsiveness to the Service Constituency” at the political methodology meetings at Texas A&M, July 17, and at the American Political Science Association meetings in Atlanta, Sept. 2-5.

Sean Bolks, 1999 Ph.D. graduate student, Dept. of Political Science, now of Binghamton U., gave a presentation titled “Small States and Alliance Dynamics” at the American Political Science Association meetings in Atlanta, Sept. 2-5.

Paul Brace, the Clarence L. Carter Professor of Political Science, received the Mentor Award from the Women’s Caucus for Political Science of the American Political Science Association “in recognition of exceptional guidance of women graduate students and junior faculty in political science.” Brace has the following publications: “Measuring the Preferences of State Supreme Courts Justices,” with Laura Langer, U. of Arizona, and Melinda Gann Hall, Michigan State U., in Journal of Politics (forthcoming); “Comparing Courts Using the American States,” with Hall, in Judicature (forthcoming); and “Mapping Economic Development Policies in the American States” in Policy Studies Journal (forthcoming). Brace gave a presentation titled “Public Opinion in the American States” at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, Atlanta, Sept. 2-5.

David S. Brown, assistant professor, Dept. of Political Science, gave a presentation titled “How Did Democracy Diffuse During the Third Wave?” at the American Political Science Association meetings in Atlanta, Sept. 2-5. Additionally, Brown published “Democracy and Social Spending in Latin America, 1980-92” in the American Political Science Review, vol. 93, no. 4, with Wendy A. Hunter, associate professor, Vanderbilt U.

Marcia J. Citron, the Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Distinguished Service Professor, professor of musicology, Shepherd School of Music, printed a paper titled “Excess and Reduction in Film-Opera: Desdemona and the Feminine in Zeffirelli’s ‘Othello'” at the international convention Shakespeare on Screen: The Centennial Conference, hosted by the U. of Malaga, Spain, Sept. 24.

Keith Hamm, professor, Dept. of Political Science, gave a presentation titled “The Evolution of Committee Structure, Powers and Procedures in 20th Century State Legislatures.” The co-authors were Ronald D. Hedlund, professor, Northeastern U., and Nancy Martorano, graduate student, Dept. of Political Science, Rice U.

Karen Schnietz, assistant professor of management, and Douglas Schuler, associate professor of management, both of the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, have written an article titled “Much Ado About Nothing? The Economic Impact of U.S. Foreign Trade Mission Participation,” which will be published in Business and Politics (fall 1999).
